Profiles in Power: The Real Role of Vitamin C in UTI Treatment

Posted in Cellulitis, Infection Killing Protocol, Profiles, Supplements, and Useful Tips

I know, I know…I threw some heavy shade on it in the Emergency Relief post. That’s because the vast majority of UTI’s are caused by the gram negative bacteria E. coli, which as I cover in The pH Connection, is highly acid-adaptive. Ascorbic acid Vitamin C, the most common form, is highly acidifying in the urine, meaning it’ll hurt more than it will help with an E. coli infection.

In E. coli, ascorbic acid is taken up and metabolized by a specific phosphotransferase system and a series of enzymatic reactions

There’s Vitamin C in the lemon juice you’re using to keep your bladder flushed out, so it’s not like you’re not getting any, you’re just not taking the acidic form.

While even alkaline forms of Vitamin C seem to have limited effect on most UTI bacteria, if you’ve had your UTI cultured and it’s caused by staphylococcus or strep, you should drop everything and go directly to ascorbic acid. In large doses it slaughters antibiotic-resistant gram positive infections with an enthusiasm that puts Mongol hordes to shame. I fell over this fact while I was searching for a cure for a serious cat bite infection.

fall

A staph infection that seemingly nothing could cure was done in by oral and topical treatment with ascorbic acid. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I’d have had trouble believing it. I’m just grateful I happened to have some on hand, and went ahead and tried it…because it surpassed my wildest hopes. It’s almost enough to make me think that not every miraculous Vitamin C testimonial on the internet is a steaming pile of unadulterated hooey.

Mind Status:

[  ] not blown

I mean, you can’t trust anything you read on the internet, right?! Buncha wild-eyed wackos on there, trying to get you to take herbs and charcoal and stuff.

dean

After observing its effects on my infection, I found a study involving Vitamin C and staph.

Interestingly, vitamin C by itself inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus as well, and 5 mM vitamin C inhibited growth completely. Even though the acidity of vitamin C contributes to the inhibition of S. aureus growth, neutralized vitamin C also inhibits the growth efficiently even without quercetin. Our results suggest that vitamin C affects the metabolism of S. aureus and that these changes are likely to result in the observed growth inhibition. Although vitamin C itself is a powerful antioxidant, its aerobic metabolism increases oxidative stress on bacterial cells. Vitamin C may therefore be a safe and natural alternative for restricting the growth of S. aureus when non-toxicity is required.

And for streptococcus infections

Enzyme activity measurement showed that L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C (Vc)) competitively inhibits the hyaluronan degradation by Streptococcus pneumoniae hyaluronate lyase

As far as Enterococcus goes…there’s some evidence that it metabolizes nominal amounts of ascorbic acid, but becomes completely inhibited by greater concentrations.

We show that Enterococcus faecalis can utilize ascorbate for fermentative growth…Increasing the concentration of ascorbate up to 12.5 mM did not improve cell yield, and 55 mM ascorbate inhibited growth completely.

If you have Entero, I’d say it’s worth a try, but proceed with caution.

You’ll be happy to hear that it isn’t necessary to get it administered by IV: I took a total of 2-3 tsp a day in a glass of water, and it cleared my infection right up. You can take larger doses if you want, but I recommend purchasing calcium ascorbate if you need to take larger doses over a prolonged period: it won’t keep you in the bathroom like ascorbic acid.

For an active UTI, (of course, also take the 4×4 doses of good OLE) start with 1500 mg 3x a day (morning, mid-afternoon, bedtime), and see how that affects your symptoms and morning test results. Adjust dosage upward as needed, and continue until your test strips have been clear at the 5 minute mark for 3 days running…which shouldn’t take very long at all.
Naturally, you still need to cleanse your gut with charcoal, and rebuild with probiotics, as well. That will restore your overall health and prevent future infections, from any type of bacteria.

Hi! My 4 year old has a UTI caused by staph. How much ascorbic acid is safe to give to her? And is OLE safe? I have both but am not sure about dosage. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello Rebeccah,
I was diagnosed with Enteroccocus faecalis. I have a SIBO and gastritis. I am concern to take Vit C hi dosage and also garlic is a problem due to SIBO. Do you thnk Vitamin C IV would work to combat this UTI infection?

I had a boil under my arm. I pampered it for over a week and it would not go away until I had it lanced. The sent the fluid off for testing and it came back MRSA. The Dr stated I didn’t have to take any antibiotics unless I ran into issues with the healing, thankfully. Well the healing is fine, but I now have another growing bump, probably soon-to-be boil. Discovered it Saturday and immediately started on high ascorbic acid Vitamin C doses 4x daily (2+ tsps in total daily) but it has not helped. The PH strips show my PH at roughly 5.5 every time, and this lump is bigger. They prescribed Bactrim DS and I just took my first one. I want to cry. I don’t want to wreck my microbiome. Why would the ascorbic acid not have dropped my PH enough?

I would make a sodium ascorbate or ascorbic acid with baking soda paste on boil area and put guaze on top and tape overnight and change twice daily.

I think you should hold of “recommending” calcium ascorbate. See Dr. Levy’s work on ascoribic acid. If you don’t want loose stool or worse, take ascorbic acid more often in smaller doses.

See the article “Titrating to bowel tolerance.” By Cathcart. This practitioner actually treated 1000s of patients with Vitamin C. Read this article and you will get a good understanding of practical means for addressing these situations, as well as data from 1000s of patients that shows the most probably range of ascorbic acid for which major condition.

Supplemental calcium, it turn out, is extremely harmful and nearly harmful in an ascorbate. Magnesium ascorbate is far more beneficial ( as most who do not supplment or eat large portions of mineral rich foods are deficient in magnesium) . It’s inexpensive to make it you mix epsom salts with ascorbic acid crystals. Instantly you have magnesium ascorbate.

Anyway, good site but your recommendation of Calcium Ascorbate is actually NOT recommended by physicians who have treated significant numbers of patients with ascorbic acid.

This is where I feel your site and lack of experience in treating people is a disadvantage. I think you should research more what you recommend. Hopefully readers are well aware to research fully anything they intend to supplement either for health improvement and especially when they are considering taking therapeutic doses of things like ascorbic acid. Most of it is low risk, and most of the time ascorbic acid: more is better. And the failure of ascorbic acid to help conditions would generally be only the failure to take enough of it, often enough. But Calcium Ascorbate has big disadvantages.

    Great!

I chopped up a clove and chewed it up with a lot of other food (I know you suggest swallowing the pieces whole) because my stomach was so sore from it last time. I’m feeling very full and bloated (like I can’t breathe in very much more) and I’m worried that it’s going to irritate my stomach again. Is there anything I can do to help? I know that this is the best thing I can do for this and I want to be better as soon as possible!! Thank you so much for your help!!

You can put it through a garlic press and then mix it with food that isn’t hot…I would call the nearest hippy store and ask if they carry slippery elm bark powder in bulk, or in capsules.
Did you take HCL with your food? Any enzymes?
Are you on a low FODMAP diet?

So it turned out to be a false alarm, haha! I was just full from eating a full meal, a clove, and a glass of Ascorbic acid water.

The thing that’s not a false alarm is that the itching down there has come back. Not as strong but still. More charcoal paste?

    Hi Rebekah!

Thank you SO much for your service! It has been so helpful. After 8 years of on and off urinary pressure/frequency/urgency, I was finally diagnosed with a Strep B bladder infection via MicroGen Dx labs.

I just want to clarify that I’m doing the right thing:
    1) Charcoal cleanse (doing that today as we speak)
    2) Cinnamon/ginger tea is good (lemon water won’t do anything, but okay?)
    3) 4-5 grams of C-500 by Now Foods (didn’t find a link on your supplies page 3x a day
    5) OLE 4×4, garlic (holding off because it gave me very bad gastritis a couple of weeks ago)

    Is colloidal silver okay?

Will you please add me to the FB group? I would sincerely appreciate it and then I can bother the other Strep B ladies and not you 😉

You mustn’t use lemon or baking soda water on Strep B! 2 grams of pure ascorbic acid powder mixed into water 4x a day, as in between meals and at bedtime. You must keep the pH LOW.

Gastritis generally indicates a case of low stomach acid (contrary to popular wisdom): did you at any point drink baking soda water, and if so, did it make you burp right away or very shortly?

Oh my goodness, thank you SO much for the speedy reply! What’s your favorite brand of ascorbic acid? I’ll return the C-500 immediately.

I did not drink baking soda water, but I did drink ACV and it made me feel way worse in my stomach (but then again, all fermented stuff makes my bladder worse). I do have Betaine HCL and have taken it before and it has been tremendously helpful. I can restart that.

I also have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, if this is helpful to know. I was diagnosed 5 years ago and am almost in remission.

Oh yes, you need HCL if you can take it without a gastritis flare, but I would guess you need to strengthen the stomach lining first.
If you don’t have a juicer, I’d get one and juice red cabbage and celery. The cabbage heals the stomach and gut lining and the celery helps with that *and* jumpstarts natural acid production.
8 oz of that juice blend or bone broth between meals should sort the lining right out, and I’d put the ascorbic acid powder doses in it.

I bought NOW brand powder from Amazon and I can vouch for its efficacy against staph (second daughter gave herself an infection scratching a mosquito bite 🙄), so I’m sure it’ll help against strep, too.

Chronic low stomach acid can start a chain reaction that causes chronic bladder pain (as well recurring UTIs), so I would really work on treating that. This may actually be the source of your pain, rather than low-grade strep. A way to tell is: if acidifying the urine pH reduces pain, odds are the problem is strep.

If, on the other hand, taking things like juiced red cabbage, bone broth, powdered slippery elm bark, marshmallow capsules, or a charcoal cleanse make your bladder feel better, the pain is caused by irritation from toxins produced by fermentation in the gut…which caused by low stomach acid.
Fix that, and you fix the bladder.

Yes, I agree with you. My stomach was messed up from a mishap with some enteric coated protolytic enzymes (Wobenzyme, to be exact) that opened up in my stomach and burned the crap out of it. Usually it’s pretty solid. I’ve been juicing celery for the past month and been taking Optimal GI powder for the past 2 months (it has all of the gut strengthening herbs). I’ve been doing bone broth as well!

So far nothing has really made my bladder feel better consistently :(, so I’m throwing everything I can at it. Gonna go get the HCL and ascorbic acid and report back.

Thank you so much!!! You are a treasure <3

*If you think your stomach can handle it*, you could try a shot of pure lemon juice (about 1.5 oz) with every meal: this gives you the acid you need in your stomach, cleanses the liver, and speeds up your gut, making a daily dose of charcoal easy to take. 1.5-2 tsp doses once a day for 3 days running is a great place to start, if you can.
Putting ascorbic acid powder in the lemon shot will prevent your urine pH from rising: be sure to toss it back Friday-night-at-the-bar-style so you don’t get all that acid in your teeth.

Forgot to mention that I’m also experiencing itchiness and a “meaty” odor down in my lady parts. I can’t take Femdophilus orally because I have a very bad bodily reaction to it (horrible intestinal burning, sore/painful joints, cystic acne on my back) – it didn’t feel like die-off because it was going strong/got worse after 5 days, so I stopped it (I have bad reactions to corn). My naturopath suggested I open the capsules and sprinkle the powder all over the lady parts in addition to putting some inside, but now I worry that some of the lactobacilli traveled up into my bladder too! Thoughts on this? I take Renew Life’s vaginal formula but it’s clear not doing much, haha!

Have you tried an infused coconut oil bullet yet?
The fastest way to kill all the bad guys is to put activated charcoal powder in a sturdy teabag, tie shut, dunk in water till the hissing stops, then apply like an oil bullet or tampon.
This can be used during the day as well as overnight: replace the first application after 4 hours, and after that they can be left for 6-8 hours at a time.
Tingling means it’s killing Candida on contact. Bacterial infections die silently, but any pain/discomfort stops within a very short time.

Here’s a mini update – the ascorbic acid has eliminated the itching in my lady parts and has taken my bladder pain down from a constant 9 to about a 4-5. I’m still having to go more frequently than normal, but I appreciate the improvement. I’m pounding the charcoal but I have to say there’s nothing odd in my stool and other than horrific smelling farts I don’t think I’ve had any die off.

I just juiced some ginger to drink between meals and I’m finding some bladder pressure/urgency even though I urinated 30 mins ago. Is this making my urine too alkaline?

Gonna add in the horseradish at meals now.

Ginger is full of terpenes, which are more efficacious against gram negative pathogens than gram positive.
The most potent weapons against gram positive bacteria are ascorbic acid and organosulphurs, especially garlic.
Horseradish is far more effective against Group A strep than Group B strep: for the latter garlic is your best weapon, after ascorbic acid.
The key is to make sure you’re absorbing it by taking HCL alongside it.

The charcoal should be adsorbing those gases: I would increase the dosage size a bit as long as your gut is moving well.
It sounds like you had a bit of a staph tissue infection, which is common. The C will wipe that out even faster than the strep.

Can you test your urine pH to see if it spiked?

I have been doing 3 caps of the Bulletproof coconut charcoal. How many do you recommend?

5 of those Bulletproof is roughly one teaspoon: when you’re regular and taking acid you can do 5 per dose, and when things are frequent and/or loose you can do 10 per dose. (2 tsp)
OLE is helpful against 99% of UTI bacteria, but it takes a wingman role against strep.
C and garlic pack the biggest punch.

Wow, Rebekah. You’re a genius. I’ve had these horrific symptoms for 8 years now and I feel like I’ve been cured in 8 days. I’m so happy!!!!

I have a couple more questions for you (and thank you so much in advance)-

            1) how long should I continue with these supplements? My naturopath said I’d have to be doing her protocol for at least 2 months so I’m not afraid to keep going. Unfortunately my acne is still present and so is the lady bits smell…but now I have my period so I can’t do the coconut bullets yet. Will be doing that when I can.

            2) Do you know how to cure Hashimoto’s? I figure it’s a long shot but I’m pretty sure my Hashis was triggered by a virus or some other kind of infection. Would be so cool if I could kick that infection’s butt too!!

            3) I have a pretty bad brewer’s yeast allergy and can’t tolerate wine, kombucha, etc….do you recommend doing caprylic acid or undecylenic acid for that?

And btw, I love the Killer series. What a great reference tool for everyone! They just need to make sure they do a MicroGen Dx test to figure out which bacteria it is!

Way to throw down some heat, girl! I’m so proud of you!

You can continue as long as desired, but the main thing you need to focus on is getting your digestion and gut flora fully sorted out: that juice blend + charcoal cleansing is the way to go.
Low stomach acid is often the root cause of Hashimoto’s, and makes you unable to tolerate anything fermented: fix that and you’re in the homestretch!
I like caprylic acid combined with OLE for dealing with yeasts, as far as chemical agents go, but activated charcoal wins the prize hands down for wiping out all issues tied to bad gut flora. That combined with the juicing will sort everything out: just be consistent and keep going.

On the lady parts…this is going to change your life.
Get the teabags below, put 1 tsp charcoal in one, tie securely shut, dunk it in water till the hissing stops, and apply like a tampon, day or night.
It will draw pathogens to itself like a magnet, bacterial and fungal.
Replace every 4-6 hours, repeat as often as desired. It can be done while you’re on your period but it’s more effective when you’re not, of course.
After all is fresh and feels lovely, make a coconut oil bullet with a bit of apple cider vinegar blended into the oil, like you’re making a salad dressing, and apply a pinkie finger joint-sized piece at bedtime 3 nights in a row.

Unfortunately I have found myself back at square one (bladder pressure and frequent urination even though I only go dribbles), even though I have been very consistent with my OLE and ascorbic acid (the 4 g every meal doesn’t even cause gas or diarrhea anymore). I, admittedly, have been inconsistent with garlic but I can’t figure out any other reason why I would go so far backward in progress 🙁 Any thoughts? My bladder is painful when pressed on and also just kind of aches when not pressed on. This started yesterday and my urethra burns a little bit. Every month I either have an E coli infection or they tell me no infection even though I am in a lot of pain. Right now nothing is showing up on a test strip. This has been happening since my last pregnancy over a year ago and I am wondering if it is Group B strep because I did test positive with that in my last pregnancy but urine samples have not shown that to ever be a cause of my bladder pain. I am using the probiotics you recommended and did the bullet as well. I am taking 2 OLE 3x daily but think I should maybe increase my dose? I also did a charcoal cleanse for 5 days. I am thinking I should try the ascorbic acid? I am tired of being in so much pain. It really affects my life and quality of life.

What response do you get to alkalizing your urine with lemon/bicarb water?

After some research I am pretty sure I have low stomach acid. I took some bicarb water and it didn’t help. However, this just brought up another question. I used to always take a lemon/ACV drink every morning and if I had an infection I would be in the worst bladder pain ever and so I stopped drinking it because I was scared of being in extreme pain before I knew I had an infection. Would this mean I have a gram positive UTI? I am curious if I can interpret it the same way as the bicarb drink…Thanks for your previous response! I missed it but will make sure your next responses don’t end up in my junk mail folder. Also, I have gastritis. I was just diagnosed after an endoscopy. This journey is very frustrating and I hope I can get my health and body back soon! It sounds like I should start with the celery juice blend? Although I hate celery and so this will be torturous but if it helps I will do it.

If your UTI pain spikes when your urine pH does, it’s a gram positive bacteria, yes.

For gastritis you’ll want to try a celery/red cabbage/carrot juice blend (half head celery, half head cabbage, 1 large carrot) which will help heal and rebuild the mucosal lining. You can also take L-glutamine and drink bone broth, and to coat the lining and give pain relief you can drink pure aloe vera juice, and slippery elm bark powder stirred into a glass of water and left till it’s…thickened. That too needs to be taken on an empty stomach, of course.

Just gulp that juice down on an empty stomach at least once a day, preferably twice. First thing in the morning and last thing at night is great. L-glutamine powder can be stirred right into the juice.
You can drink a cup of bone broth, aloe, or slippery elm between meals.

The gastritis should improve by leaps and bounds, and you’ll be able to add a lemon juice shot or a couple of HCL capsules to meals within a couple of weeks.

  9. Hi. Could use some help. I’ve had a UTI 5x’s since last Dec. I have taken the antibiotics and they help but don’t seem to clean up the problem. The UTI I have is a Staff infection. I have been testing my urine and it appears to be normal but I still have an uncomfortable feeling in the bladder. I have added 5000iu of C and am hoping this will clear up the trouble. I have no idea what OLE is and would take it if it will clear up this problem. Thank you for your attention and help to my UTI problem.

For an entero UTI you want to take a minimum 2 gram dose 3-4x a day.
Lower doses can feed the bacteria but higher doses overwhelm and kill it. Spreading them out over the course of the day also keeps urine pH low enough to suppress entero growth.

    Hi There

i have suffered from UTI’s/IC for 15 years. Through various natural protocols I did have things very much under control but a massive flare has me suicidal. I have E-coli, Staph and Klebsiella. I have found you sight and been on the garlic for 2 days waiting for everything to arrive. I have requested FB group. please approve and let me know how to combat these together! I suspect clear the E-coli first then go after the staph with Vit C? Appreciate any help very very much.

    Thank you

I have a flare up of candida after consuming too many starches.
Would OLE and charcoal eradicate the candida. I have been AIP for over a year.

Hello there, I have been addicted to your site for the last 4 days as I feel like I have a mild UTI. I went to the doc and the said my dip tests were negative and did a culture. I got these results last night and it’s strep B. I have a 6 months old baby and struggled with strep B my whole pregnancy (probably for the past 4 years, was GBS positive with my 2nd pregnancy also). Same scenario strep B UTI, antibiotics then raging yeast infection the remainder of pregnancy (4 months). As I do not want to repeat this sequence I have not taken the antibiotics prescribed. I have purchased your supplies and plan to start phase 1 today. My test strip this morning consistent with docs, positive for leaukocytes. However, I am scared being a stay at home, in the trenches mother of 3 little girls, the 6 month old who I am nursing very frequently. So I can not be out of commission. My littlest does not sleep well nursing 5ish times at night so I am tired and need to keep nourished. Should I try your protocol? Should I do a more gentle approach? Thank you kindly!!

You need to take ascorbic acid!
The baking soda/lemon juice won’t help you, but ascorbic acid Vitamin C and OLE will. They’re both safe for the baby.
The charcoal is going to be your best friend, because it will sweep away Candida without letting any toxins into your blood.
Start the Quick and Dirty Cleanse right away, alongside 500 mg of ascorbic acid 3x a day and a clove of raw garlic with meals. Take the charcoal for a good 5 days before you introduce a capsule of OLE with every meal.
Let me know how you do!

Thank you so much for your knowledge and support! It is wonderful to find a resource like this when you are feeling so confused and pressured by mainstream medicine. Should I test my urine again more towards the end of the 5 days of the cleanse? Also, how long should I take OLE with meals after the charcoal cleanse, until clear on tests or 3 days after clear? Thank you so much and I will keep you posted. Starting in the AM!

Cristina, I would test it first thing every morning and take pics at 2 and 5 minutes.
You can compare them day by day to monitor your progress.
Take all meds until you get a clear test 3 days in a row, and then taper down.
Strep B is a tough little bugger that likes to hang around at low levels for ages: I would concentrate on ascorbic acid, OLE, pau d’arco, and oregano oil.
You can take the OLE and pau in between meals and the oregano and ascorbic acid with them, so you’re hitting the infection every couple of hours.
If you get die-off symptoms, take an extra charcoal dose between meals and all your meds the next time you eat.
Let me know how it goes! ?

I’m absolutely thrilled I found you and your site (via Chris Kesser), very early on in my UTI at the first twinge. I have learned a ton from you already. I don’t get them very often, and this is the first after I’ve started repairing my gut flora from a 40 year lifetime of constant antibiotics from birth literally, I’m the poster child of the vicious cycle and have the worst biodiversity my Functional MD has ever seen…so antibiotics are out of the question. I’m sure I’ll be asking a few questions later, but first, again I want to THANK YOU. The second, my trust went to 11 when I saw the thumbnail gif of Dean Winchester for this post. I fully admit that stupid show is my guilty pleasure and I have a schoolgirl crush on Dean/Jensen. Bahahaha! Despite the annoyance this morning with the UTI, my day isn’t so bad now. 🙂

      Sam: “I lost my shoe.”
      Dean: “I think I’m adorable.”
      Dean: “I am BATMAN!”
      Dean: “Bring me some PIE!”
      “Pudding!!!”
*most epic scream ever* “That was SCARY!”

“Idjits.” (No attribution really needed with any of these, right?)
“You betrayed me? No one in the history of torture’s been tortured with torture like the torture you’ll be tortured with.” (I laughed myself sick)

FBI Agent: “I, uh..I shot the sheriff.”
Dean: “But you didn’t shoot the deputy!” *encouraging smile*

I’m not usually a fan of the genre, but that show is HILARIOUS, and I love that Jensen and Jared are such great family men in real life. It’s the only TV show I ever googled to find out about the actors who star in it.

      Okay, business. *ahem*

You’re definitely in dire need of charcoal cleansing, but you should know that with a severely dysbiotic gut that’s been that way for a long time, it’s common to get sick as a dog for a bit when you cleanse, because all the nasties that have been lurking throughout your body get flushed out of hiding. I’m talking sore throat, sinuses going ape?, flu-like all over crappiness, that kind of thing. It may take repeated sweeps with large doses of charcoal to get that Candida if it has a biofilm, which is very common with repeated antibiotic/anti-fungal use, or prolonged corticosteroid use.
Join the FB group to meet the ladies who’ve already killed their infections and healed their gut biomes! You can message me there.
